Every server needs a good backup strategy to protect yourself from potential data loss. This article specifies what needs to be backed up. By backing up the following, then the restoration of your Savance Enterprise environment becomes that much quicker and easier of a task in the event of a failure. Best practices for backups include both a local backup and an offsite backup. A local backup is where the files are copied to another machine on the same local area network, usually on a nightly basis. Local backups are quick to restore because the files are close by. An offsite backup is where the files are copied to another machine at a completely different physical location through the internet. Offsite backups take longer to restore because the files must be downloaded through the internet in the event of a failure. They are also completely dependent on your internet connection. However, offsite backups are an extra layer of protection in the event that the local backup becomes damaged or unusable. There are a number of different backup software packages out there that can automate this backup and restore process. BackupAssist is a popular one, for example. BackupPC is another.

Savance Folder

• You will want to backup everything under the ‘C:\Savance’ folder EXCEPT for the folder called ‘Backups’. The most critical pieces to Savance Enterprise are the database backup and your eDocuments, which are both saved to this location by default.

  

Registry Files

• Finally, you may want to back up all the registry keys pertaining to Savance Enterprise to avoid having to reconfigure settings later. Back up everything under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Savance\SavanceServer node.
